Getting started
What is KidUniversity?
KidUniversity is a learning app for kids in grades 2 to 8. Every course is a full 180-day school year of short lessons, review days and unit tests, with Professor Hoot the owl as your child's guide. It also has a check-up and study plan, a read-aloud Library of 1,600+ books, Watch & Learn videos, learning games, and reports for parents. Everything works in English and Spanish.
Which grades and subjects are included?
How do I create an account?
- Go to app.kiduniversity.net and choose Create an account.
- Enter your email and a password of at least 8 characters. This is one account for the whole family.
- Add your first learner with a first name or nickname and their grade, then tap Start learning.
To add another child later, tap the learner's name at the top of the screen and choose Add another learner.
Can we use KidUniversity on more than one device?
Yes. KidUniversity works in any web browser today, and the iPhone, iPad and Android apps are coming soon. Sign in with the same family account on each device and every child's progress and your subscription come along.
How do I change a child's grade?
Open Grown-ups (🔒) at the top of the screen, answer the grown-ups question, and pick a new grade next to the child's name under Learners. Lessons, books, videos, games and music follow the grade. When a child finishes every lesson in a grade, they also get a graduation ceremony and the option to move up.
What is the Grown-ups area?
It's the part of the app for parents: progress reports, Ask Hoot settings and history, KidUniversity Plus, the read-aloud voice, the weekly email, learners, sign-out and account deletion. It's behind a parental gate: a multiplication question written in words, such as "What is seven times eight?", that you answer in numbers.
I forgot my password.
On the sign-in screen, tap Forgot your password? and enter your account's email. We'll email you a 6-digit code that works for 15 minutes; check your spam folder if you don't see it. Then choose a new password.
Can I turn off the music and sounds?
Yes. The 🎵 and 🔊 buttons turn the theme music and sound effects on and off.
Check-up & study plans
What is the check-up?
A short placement check for one subject at one grade, about 10 minutes. It asks three questions from each of several units spread across the year (reading and English use a few reading passages instead). It isn't a test: nothing is scored for a grade, and kids can tap "I'm not sure yet". More about the check-up.
What does the study plan show?
After a check-up, your child's plan lists Practice these first (units where they missed questions), Then keep going, and Already strong (skip ahead!). The home screen shows today's plan. Check-ups at different grades add up, and each grade's latest check-up counts.
What if the check-up was too easy or too hard?
If your child gets most questions right, Hoot suggests trying the next grade's check-up. If many were tricky, Hoot suggests the grade before. You can take a check-up again at any time.
Is the check-up free?
Yes. The check-up, the study plan and parent reports are included on the free plan.
Subscriptions & billing
What does KidUniversity Plus cost?
$7.99 a month on the web for the whole family, every child included, and $59.99/year. New subscribers on the web get a 1-week free trial. Unit 1 of every course is always free. See pricing.
How do I subscribe?
Open Grown-ups (🔒), answer the grown-ups question and choose a plan in KidUniversity Plus. On the web you pay by card through our secure checkout. In the iPhone, iPad and Android apps, payment goes through your Apple ID or Google account. Plus belongs to your family account, so it works on every device you sign in on.
How do I cancel?
If you subscribed on the web: sign in at app.kiduniversity.net, open Grown-ups (🔒), answer the grown-ups question, and in KidUniversity Plus tap Manage or cancel subscription.
If you subscribed on iPhone or iPad: open the Settings app, tap your name, then Subscriptions, choose KidUniversity and tap Cancel Subscription. Or go to apps.apple.com/account/subscriptions.
If you subscribed on Android: open the Google Play Store app, tap your profile picture, then Payments & subscriptions → Subscriptions, choose KidUniversity and tap Cancel subscription. Or go to play.google.com/store/account/subscriptions.
In every case, Plus stays on until the end of the period you already paid for. Deleting the app or your account doesn't cancel an Apple or Google subscription, so cancel it there too.
I subscribed on my phone. Does Plus work on the web too?
Yes. Sign in with the same family account and Plus works on the web, iPhone, iPad and Android.
I subscribed but lessons are still locked.
Make sure you're signed in with the family account you subscribed with. In the iPhone, iPad or Android app, open Grown-ups → KidUniversity Plus and tap Restore purchases. Still stuck? Email support@kiduniversity.net.
Are there ads or other purchases?
No ads, ever. KidUniversity Plus is the only purchase, and it's only offered to grown-ups behind the parental gate.
Español
Can my child learn in Spanish?
Yes. Tap 🌐 in the app to switch between English and Spanish any time. The screens, lessons, Professor Hoot's voice and Ask Hoot's answers all switch, and the Library includes picture books in Spanish.
Is the weekly email in Spanish too?
Yes. The weekly progress email is written in the language the app is set to.
Is there a Spanish version of this website?
Yes: kiduniversity.net/es. Every page has a 🌐 English / Español switch.
Privacy & safety
How does Ask Hoot work, and is it safe?
Ask Hoot lets a learner type any question, such as how to solve a math problem, and Professor Hoot answers in kid-friendly words. Answers are written by an AI (Claude, by Anthropic). They're usually right but can make mistakes.
- Off by default. Ask Hoot stays off until a parent turns it on for each child in Grown-ups → Ask Hoot.
- Parents see everything. You can read every question and answer, and delete a child's questions at any time.
- Kids can flag answers. A 🚩 Report button on each answer lets a grown-up check it.
- Privacy. Questions are sent to Anthropic to write the answer, without your child's name, and anything that looks like an email address or phone number is blanked out. Hoot is told never to ask for personal information and to steer away from grown-up topics.
- Daily limit. Up to 10 questions a day on the free plan and 25 with Plus.
What data do you collect?
Only what the app needs to work: the parent's sign-in email, each learner's first name or nickname and grade, learning progress (lessons, scores, books), Ask Hoot questions if you turn it on, and whether your family has Plus. No ads, no tracking or third-party analytics, and nothing is sold. Read the privacy policy.
How do I delete my account?
Open Grown-ups (🔒), answer the grown-ups question, scroll to Delete account, type DELETE and confirm. This permanently deletes the account, every learner and all of their progress right away. You can also remove a single child, or clear just their Ask Hoot history. More about deleting your account.
Can I turn off the weekly email?
Yes. Every Sunday we email a short note about what each child learned that week. Turn it off in Grown-ups → Weekly email, or with the unsubscribe link in any email.
Where are graduation photos stored?
Cap-and-gown photos for the diploma stay on your own device. They're never uploaded to KidUniversity.
