Accessibility
We want every child and every parent to be able to use KidUniversity. Here's what we do today, and how to tell us when something gets in your way.
What we do
- Readable contrast. We choose text and button colors for strong contrast with their background, in both light and dark mode.
- Large tap targets. Buttons and links in the app are sized for small fingers, generally at least 44 pixels tall.
- Screen-reader labels. We give buttons, icons and images text labels so screen readers can announce them, and use real headings and landmarks on our pages so they're easy to move through, including with a keyboard.
- Read-aloud. "Read to me" buttons read lessons and questions aloud, the Library highlights each word as it's read, and the animated Watch & Learn lessons show captions, so children who are still learning to read can follow along.
- English and Spanish. The screens, Professor Hoot's voice and Ask Hoot's answers switch between English and Spanish at any time, and this website has a Spanish version.
- Calm by choice. You can turn off the music and sound effects, and the website respects your device's "reduce motion" setting.
Where we're still working
KidUniversity is new and we haven't had an outside accessibility audit yet. Some games and drag-and-drop activities may be harder to use with a screen reader or keyboard alone, some videos from other sources may not have captions in Spanish, and some lessons are still being translated into Spanish. We fix problems as we find them.
Report a problem
If something on the website or in the app is hard to use for you or your child, please tell us. Let us know the page or screen, the device and browser, and any assistive technology you use (such as a screen reader or zoom).
